plantar-fasciitis6According to Men’s Journal, plantar fasciitis can occur during exercise when the body is not making optimal use of legs and hips. While plantar fasciitis is known as an overuse injury, when the hips are not being flexed enough or the lower calf muscles are being overused, this can cause the plantar fascia to work more than it has to. Stretching the calves and hips can do just as much to ease the soreness of plantar fasciitis as a regular foot stretch would. The plantar fascia release, rolling a ball under the foot and pointing the toes downward at tender spots, can provide additional relief to the foot.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

·     Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

When purchasing new running shoes, it may be best to shop at specialty running stores where employees are trained to find the right shoe for each customer. Choosing the Right Running Shoes for Your Foot Type

Running Mechanics

Over-pronators

Under-pronation

Is less common than over-pronation. This usually happens to those who have inflexible feet and high arches. Even though there is less rotational stress on the ankles and knees, it prevents any kind of shock absorptions. Under-pronation needs shoes with increase in cushion and flexibility.

fungal-toenail2Recently in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dave Grohl opened up about performing with his band the Foo Fighters with a broken ankle. Grohl calls his broken ankle a “beautiful blessing in disguise” as the band has been playing longer sets than ever since Grohl has to spend much of his time sitting on the stage. He recalls the night his ankle broke in Sweden and continued playing the entire set. “When it happened I didn’t feel a thing, I tried to get up and walk and my ankle collapsed under my weight,” he stated.

Broken Ankles

A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. hammertoe4The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has created a program to condition the foot and ankle in terms of strength and flexibility. The program was created to help break up the long hours of those that constantly have to stand on their feet while at work. There are six exercises in total, such as heel cord stretch, golf ball roll, and calf raise, which should be performed at least three to five days per week.

stretching2Researchers at the University of Arizona have been working on a device that monitors feet with sensors and fiber optics in order to predict areas likely to develop ulcers. Called “Smart Socks,” this technology was created to reduce the devastatingly high number of amputations that often result from diabetic neuropathy. Systemic Diseases of the Feet

One of the best ways to prevent and treat Morton’s neuroma is to wear low heeled shoes with a wider toe box so the bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves, are not squeezed. Morton’s Neuroma

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

fungal-toenail2According to a study conducted at the University of Nevada and presented in the American Society of Biomechanics, when the foot hits in the ground while wearing rebound shoes, there is a 15% increase in force compared to a 96% increase when wearing standard running shoes. Rebound shoes, or boots with springs, are being used as a new trendy exercise with claims of reducing the intensity between the foot and the ground when jumping or running. Although more studies have found that the shoes reduce injuries, they have been known to cause an increase blisters on the feet.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?
